VOLVO DELIVERS NEW BUS FOR PEOPLE WITH REDUCED MOBILITY

VOLVO DELIVERS NEW BUS FOR PEOPLE WITH REDUCED MOBILITY

Especially devised for the Island of Madeira

Through its dealership in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, last Friday, 6th September, Volvo delivered a new passenger transport vehicle to the company Horários do Funchal. It was especially developed to address the very specific requirements of the region and its inhabitants with special needs.

The new vehicle was based on a Volvo chassis with a front engine and an interior without any slope, and its design entailed moving the driving position back, ensuring the optimum conditions of use and interaction with the passengers.

The interior of this new bus was designed to provide an above-average level of comfort. But the main innovation are the optimised means of access for people with reduced mobility who are in wheelchairs and now have an independent, dedicated entrance in this vehicle.

The bus has a capacity to simultaneously transport up to 9 wheelchairs. But, on a day-to-day basis, this equipment could be part of the normal service fleet of the company responsible for public transport in Funchal, as all the passenger seats can be easily removed or reintegrated.

For Volvo, the project was extremely demanding from a technical and conceptual point of view, as it was necessary to ensure the equipment’s full functionality in all its different situations. It has a completely level interior deck and is high up from the ground due to the Island’s mountainous terrain and the specific requirements of the actual Contract Specifications.

The vehicle presentation ceremony took place in the presence of the Madeira Regional Authorities, as well as all the employees from the company Horários do Funchal.
