Nors Group is a global success case in industrial mathematics

The Nors Group was invited to take part in the biggest worldwide industrial mathematics congress, ICIAM 2019, during which the process for implementing the Industrial Mathematics Laboratory in the Group and two of its projects were presented as success stories.

The Nors Group was present at the latest edition of the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM 2019), an event that took place from 15th to 19th July in Valencia, where King Philip VI of Spain presided over the opening. The Nors Group was the only Portuguese business group to be present at this important global congress, where it spoke on the importance of investing in applied mathematics in an industrial context.

Various entities from the national scientific ecosystem were also present, with a special note for the participation of various members of the Portuguese Service Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation (PT-MATHS-IN).

During the Industry Day, which accounted for one day of the congress, besides the Nors Group, there were speakers representing various international companies such as Siemens (Germany), Fujitsu (Japan), Gore (USA), Microflow (The Netherlands), Banque National (Canada), Santander (Spain), EDF (France), Bosch (Germany), NIST (Department of Trade, USA), Ferroglobe (Spain), NEC (Germany) and Reganosa (Spain).

The implementation of the Laboratory of Industrial Mathematics at the Nors Group is the result of a project that began in 2014 between the Portuguese multinational and the Laboratory for Mathematical Engineering from LEMA (Porto School of Engineering), which enabled the Nors Group to implement new management methods and support tools.

The project arose from an urgent proposition: to sell more while simultaneously reducing the stock of replacement parts. At the time, two major challenges had to be overcome. On the one hand, the use of a new approach based on industrial mathematics and on the other, cascading and integrating these new methods and tools within its teams.

Creating the Industrial Mathematics Laboratory at the Nors Group enabled what the company internally calls a maths footprint to be created and it is now recognised as a facilitator for employees to carry out their daily tasks, as well as an important feature in the business’s profitability.

In addition, the Nors Group is part of Core Team, a group of European companies, promoted by the European Service Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation (EU-MATHS-IN), which together with the European Union, carries out work to boost industrial mathematics at a European level. Besides the Nors Group, members of this core team include Siemens, Michelin, Shell, Safran and Bosch.

ICIAM, which is currently in its 9th edition, is the biggest global Industrial Mathematics event, which brings together the main global researchers, companies and societies every four years. The next edition will take place in Tokyo in 2023.
